The term "Kata" originally referred to standardized exercise sequences as are common in various Far Eastern martial arts. With the help of these kata (without a real opponent) elementary movement sequences of the respective discipline can be worked out and deepened.
Based on the kata in the traditional sense, this etude combines typical and fundamental technical elements of timpani playing.
Basically, the timpani etude "KATA" is a 20-minute warm-up exercise. The different technical requirements that the player encounters in the course of the etude gradually become more and more demanding. Nevertheless, the degree of difficulty of the individual exercise sections is measured in such a way that all movement sequences and especially the sound quality remain easily controllable at all times. The nature of the respective demands in the successive sections is chosen in such a way that more strenuous passages are followed by more relaxing passages. As a result, "KATA" can also be easily mastered in terms of strength. Due to its concept and structure, "KATA" is particularly well suited both for daily game preparation and for getting back into the game after longer breaks in practice and playing (e.g. after vacation).[1]
