Program Notes

TYMPANON is a true rarity in the timpani literature and can in many respects be described as a heavyweight in the best sense of the word: the length of the score alone, with a performance duration of around half an hour, places high demands on everyone involved. In addition, there are very few solo works for 2 timpanists in which the players are confronted with such a density and variety of musical ideas. The technical requirements are accordingly at a high level, but can be easily mastered by Arend Weitzel with the appropriate practice and rehearsal effort.

About the history of this edit:

TYMPANON was completed and premiered in 1970 by Helmut Bornefeld (1906-1990) as a solo piece for one player with six timpani. The original score presents the soloist with great playing difficulties, which makes the division of the musical text between two timpani appear almost unavoidable.

In 1984, Arend Weitzel was given a copy of Helmut Bornefeld's TYMPANON. Bornefeld knew about the technical difficulties of performing his composition. In a letter, he therefore gave Arend Weitzel a free hand, "... arrange the whole thing, both in terms of the number and type of instruments, so that a convincing whole emerges!".

However, Bornefeld also reworked TYMPANON himself. In the revised version he made numerous cuts and changed some passages.

On the occasion of a chamber concert that took place in Bochum in 1997, Arend Weitzel arranged a version for two timpani based on the original version, which was performed for the first time at the time. Great importance was attached to preserving the compositional structures of the original on the one hand and creating two fully-fledged parts on the other hand, which enable a musically interesting dialogue and optimum playability.

The present version combines the original version with elements of Bornefeld's revision for the first time. However, these were only included in Scene VII, in which the original musical text was supplemented and modified by a few parts of the revision, which was extremely useful for the musical development of the final movement. The cuts and omissions from Bornefeld's revised version, on the other hand, were completely ignored.

At the same time as this editing, the same publisher (Carus-Verlag, Stuttgart) published the version for one player revised by Bornefeld.[1]
