Program Notes

The Big Bang was written for Dr. Freeze whose ideas and conversations about music were an inspiration for this composition. I attempted to take advantage his varied interests and talents. He enjoys performing and conducting experimental music, as well as the more standard repertory, and also performed in a jazz duo with Charles Dowd. At Tracy’s request I arranged the composition, originally written for soloist and wind ensemble, for soloist and percussion ensemble.

This first movement of three, conflagration, begins as an amorphous, swirling, mass until it reaches critical mass and explodes into lines that are counterpointing and crashing into each other. In the middle of this movement there is an oboe and drum duet. It also features the percussion section in a kind of competition with the soloist.
