Review
The SEVEN PERCUSSION TRIOS are from A Battere, "a percussion course for study and concert," edited by S. Fink. [Three scores are needed for performance.] Each trio is for a different instrumentation, i.e., three tenor drums; three wood drums; two cowbells, two tom toms, and bass drum; etc. The composer encourages instrument substitution as long as balance of sonority and dynamics are maintained. He also suggests that the players supply tempo and dynamic markings where there are none in the score. The notation is conventional with only the first trio having sections in proportional notation. There is considerable interest and challenge in the rhythmic and metric content. The Trios would be of medium level difficulty for college level students and would seem to provide excellent material for a do-it-yourself, no-conductor experience.
