Review

Theodore Presser Company, selling agent Seigfried Fink has attempted to render his musical encounters from the Malaysian peninsula in Jeux Pour Quatre. This percussion quartet represents the cosmopolitan tendendes of Malaysian music with the common xylophone-metallophone ensemble "framed by rhythmic drum periods." The instrumentation consists of three mallet players on vibraphone, xylophone, and marimba with the fourth player on four bongos. The work is arranged in three movements with a total approximate duration of seven minutes. The first movement, Arcade, begins allegretto with the tutti unison rhythmic theme. This is followed by a solo episode of the bongo player in 5/16 and 7/16. Variations of the two above sections alternate throughout Arcade to unify the movement. Fink places emphasis on unison writing in mix-metered time to give th movement direction. Pulse, the second movement, concentrates on texture and timbre for contrast. It is written on two grand staffs with each bar representing a quarter note. The notes do not have stems and are placed in either the first or second half of each at. Pulse can be performed in one of two versions, played on one vibraphone and one marimba (two players per instrument), or with the bass clef player on a low membranophone and the treble clef player on a temple block or dampened cowbell. This quiet movement would probably be very effective after the performers became accustomed to reading the parts. The last movement, Peneng Races, is similar to Arcade. A large amount of unison chromatic sequences are used with the vibraphone and bongos as accompaniment. However, each player has a solo and the work concludes with a forceful sixteenth note unison cresendo. Jeux Pour Quatre is designed for intermediate-advanced players. However, due to the large portions of unison writing, this work may be suitable for a younger college percussion ensemble.
