Review
ENCOUNTERS VII is written for two percussionists and was commissioned by Steve Grhno and Pat Hollenbeck. Percussion I uses: vibes, 4 suspended cymbals, chimes, 4 crotales, marimba, 5 timpani, and bongos; Percussion H uses: vibes, 4 graduated tom-toms, chimes, 4 crotales, 2 brake drums, 6 graduated drums and 1 timpano. There are two detailed pages of instructions for the performers covering all aspects of the performance. For the most part there are no measures and ensemble is achieved by sight cues, timing and listening. There are improvised sections, sustained or ringing sections for one player while the other player is rhythmic and some theatre sections. ENCOUNTERS VII represents the latest in percussion duos. It is a difficult work of extreme complexity employing the contemporary technics of percussion which is very well written and requires two excellent percussionists.
