Program Notes
The subject matter of Haiku poetry often reflects the casual coexistence of seemingly unrelated phenomena. The castanet rhythms of Southern Spain and the metric structure of this originally Japanese form of poetry are combined in Andalusian Haiku. The 17 syllable three-line structure that is characteristic of haiku is often stated in successive lines of five, seven, and five, seven, and five syllables each. This is expressed in this piece as three successive measures of beats. The beginning of each measure is accented. First introduced as 16th notes after a brief repetitious introduction, the pattern recurs in augmentation as eighth notes and quarter notes. The left and right hand strokes of the pattern recur consistently as it is shifted back and forth between the two players. Rhythmic episodes in a variety of metric patterns and rhythmic subdivisions occur in between statements of the haiku-like pattern. The overall form is a modified palindrome that somewhat resembles a rondo. The rhythmic interplay between the two parts builds in intensity as the piece reaches its conclusion; a final statement of the 17-note pattern followed by a very brief codetta.[1]
