Review

Aggressively is a 3:00 minute grade V snare drum solo written in the orchestral style using rolls and flams. Two areas of the snare drum head are used throughout - middle and edge. There is considerable use of single sticking in a sixteen note passage at J = 120 (RRRR LLLL or RLLL RLLL or LRRR LRRR) which indicates fast wrists or finger style. An ad lib cadenza, with one measure written out, is included towards the end of the solo which indicates, “that flams are to go into alternate flam sticking as fast as practiced, then gradually change sound of flams to equal double strokes.” The solo ends in a presto tempo with much double sticking. Mr. McCormick states that the purpose of the solo is to explore the tonal capabilities of the snare drum. To this end he has done an excellent job. Reviewed By: John Beck[1]
