Suite en Concert pour flûte et percussion by André Jolivet is also entitled 2nd Concerto for Flute in the score, and is dedicated to Jean Piere Rampal, who gave its first performance. The work is scored for four “multi-percussion” setups using a total of 40 percussion instruments, and one soloist playing flute and alto flute. The virtuosic writing for the percussion makes almost impossible demands on each of the four percussionists. A well developed sensitivity to each other is re-quired if the individual contributions are to fall into place. Irrational rhythms, subtle timbres, and powerful tensions characterize the suite, and Jolivet’s musical style centers around a bewitching palette of woods, skins and metals. The flute soloist, using technically demanding arabesque trills, plays a liberating, virtuosic role, set apart and juxtaposed from the percussion “orchestra”. In 1932 Jolivet met the highly controversial composer Edgar Varese (Ionisation) and inherited from him a lifelong interest in percussion instruments. In 1936 Jolivet and Olivier Messaiaen formed a group called ‘La jeune France’ dedicated to the promotion of modern music with national leanings. His music contains a long-term experimen-tation with asymmetrical rhythms and polytonality. Jolivet wrote two other well known percussion works: Heptade for trumpet with one multi-percussionist, and Ceremonial for six percussionists. Suite en Concert was recorded on The Krou-mata Percussion Ensemble 2, Manuela Wiesler, flute, BIS-CD 272.
