Overview
Morello, Joe. New Directions in Rhythm: Studies in ¾ and 5/4 Jazz. Chicago, Illinois: Jomor Publications, 1963.
The purpose of this book is to learn and be comfortable with odd time signatures because, in the 1960’s, this was becoming more popular in jazz. The exercises in this book aren’t meant to be played exactly like this while in a band, but more for a “systematic development of coordination and a musical approach to playing in these different time signatures.” Morello also wrote this book to answer many requests from students and professionals on how he uses the drum set. Someone who studies from this book should already know the basic fundamentals of the instrument. All in all, “this extensive study is to develop complete control of ride cymbal, bass drum, hi-hat and left hand so as to be able to play any combination of these rhythms at will with a natural feel.”
