Seth Adams’s research interests include musical creativity, philosophy of music education, and how technology mediates the musical experience. His recent work at Northwestern includes teaching a course on the history of music recording, studying wind band conducting with Mallory Thompson, and learning the audiovisual computer programming language Max. In 2020, Seth founded the all-virtual Temporal Displacement Orchestra, a group of musicians dedicated to exploring the possibilities of making music across time and space.

Immediately prior to his studies at Northwestern, Seth was the Director of Bands at UIC College Prep High School in Chicago, where he conducted eight concert bands at the beginner and intermediate level. During the aughts, Seth was a passionate pit percussionist and later teacher/arranger in the drum and bugle corps world, performing with Glassmen and Magic of Orlando, then teaching and arranging for the front ensembles of Carolina Crown and Blue Stars. Since 2012, Seth has been an active freelance bassist in the Chicago music scene, playing functions with chart-reading big bands, festivals with rote-learning rock bands, and family-friendly shows with the award-winning Animal Farm, a band who write and perform animal story-songs dealing with issues including the environment, community building, and self-expression.

Seth lives in Chicago with his wife, son, and an excessive number of musical instruments.
