Program Notes

The Russian Sailor's Dance is a popular song from Gliere's ballet The Red Poppy. Although the ballet is not often performed, this song has become a staple of orchestral and band concerts for years. The original ballet premiered in 1927. Even though Gliere wrote symphonies, chamber works and songs, this tune from the ballet is his most famous work.
