Nocturne I is a theme and variations premised on a simple ostinato, which is pervasive in the left hand throughout the piece. There is a profound sense of existentialism tied to the concept of isolation and solitude, which tends to lead towards cyclic patterns of thought. The incessant nature of the ostinato seeks to draw an analogy to this phenomenon.
