Program Notes

I live by the Gowanus Canal. A dumping ground for industrial, farming, and medical waste in the canal since the mid-19th century. One of the most polluted bodies of water in the United States, and possibly radioactive.

From afar, it is still quite beautiful.

Next to the canal is a metal scrapyard. A second sea of bicycle frames, old chairs, rust. A memorial to the sheer amount of stuff that is constantly created, used, discarded. Seeing the two together is terrifying, and beautiful.

Commissioned by Adam Groh and the Western Carolina University Percussion Ensemble, 2019.[1]
