Description

Istana Jawa (Javanese Palace) is a work inspired by Javanese Gamelan, as it sounds for example in the Kraton (Sultan's Palace) in Jokyakarta. Composer Michel Ponsioen quickly came into contact with Javanese gamelan with the Gending ensemble during his percussion studies. , in which Western commissioned compositions are performed on Javanese gamelan instruments. Since 1997, Michel has made four tours through Indonesia with this ensemble and played at various gamelan festivals. Due to the knowledge and impressions gained, the composer also thought it would be a nice challenge to create a gamelan-inspired composition for percussion ensemble. In Istana Jawa, various gamelan styles are combined, such as the slow dreamy sounds of the gamelan from central Java as the exciting faster gamelan music of west Java (Sunda) and the Balinese gamelan. Together with the Indonesian sounds of nature, all these sounds make the work a very atmospheric piece, where you will soon imagine yourself in the Emerald Belt.
