Program Notes

Amethyst, scored for double seconds (low F) and B-flat clarinet is the second work in the Birthstones series. The tonality of this work is derived from a serialized spelling of the stone. However, the rhythms and meters are more loosely composed and based on properties of the stone itself. This approach is to add variety to the overall series and is in juxtaposition to the other works.
