Diga-Diga Doom Doom by Michael Huestis is an easy percussion ensemble work that demonstrates how much musical variety can come from a single rhythmic idea. With variable instrumentation that can accommodate ensembles of different sizes, the piece provides an accessible and rewarding ensemble experience for developing percussionists.


The opening “diga-diga doom doom” motif is first presented in unison before gradually developing through imitation, canon, dynamic contrast, and layered ensemble textures. As the piece unfolds, performers encounter a variety of ensemble roles while remaining grounded in familiar rhythmic material; featured moments for timpani, concert toms, congas, and bongos allow different sections of the ensemble to step into the spotlight. The music steadily builds before returning to the opening motif for a satisfying and exciting conclusion.
