General Info

OVERVIEW

  • Based on Number 5
  • Small Set-Up
  • Influenced by Steve Reich
  • Good Choice for Undergraduate Recital
  • Advanced High School Appropriate

Instrumentation

Player 1: Brake Drum & Splash Cymbal & Bongos & Snare Drum & 2 Concert Tom-toms (High and Low)
Player 2: Brake Drum & Splash Cymbal & Bongos & Snare Drum & 2 Concert Tom-toms (High and Low)

ITEM DETAILS

Based on the number five, Joe Moore's Dimension 5 is a multi-percussion duet heavily influenced by Steve Reich's Six Marimbas and Piano Phase. Both players use an identical setup of instruments, all of which are easily found in any percussion studio.

The music is all about fives - 5/4 and 5/8 time signatures, five-note groups, five-based accent patterns, and of course plenty of quintuplets. Moore uses the additive process in many phrases, starting out with a single note and slowly adding in more notes to create an increasingly complex weave of sounds.

Dimension 5 is a great choice for a multi-percussion piece on any undergraduate recital. Advanced high school players could also learn this piece to be a highlight during a percussion ensemble concert.

Composer Notes

Dimension 5 is a multiple percussion duet. The piece is based on the number five and is filled with five bar phrases and groupings of five notes. Concepts from the additive process of Steve Reich’s piece Six Marimbas, along with ideas from Reich’s Piano Phase, and Moore's obsession with the number five came to play in the composition of this piece.
