I was born April 23, 1947 in New Haven, Connecticut. I received my education at the University of Notre Dame (B.A. English, 1969), the Hartt College of Music (B. Mus. Composition — principally with Arnold Franchetti, 1977) and the Manhattan School of Music (M. Mus. Composition — with Charles Wuorinen, 1978). Since 1975 I have earned my livelihood as a self-employed piano technician. Having declined to enter academia or the commercial music world, and not being a performer, most of the not inconsiderable performances of my music have been self-initiated and self-funded, the chief of these being three full- length concerts at Merkin Hall in New York City (1986, 1997 and 2004), involving a varied assemblage of chamber and solo musicians. In addition, from 1990 to 2006 my late wife Rosemarie Koczÿ and I hosted annual gatherings of art and music (sometimes poetry as well) in our home, at which one or more of my compositions would be presented. Since her death in 2007, I have continued these yearly concerts. On November 5, 8 and 12, 2017 again at Merkin I offered pianist Mateusz Borowiak his American concert debut, during which he premiered my first six piano sonatas. [1]
