Serious Business by Kyle H. Peters is a medium-advanced percussion quintet that blends funk, hip-hop, Latin influences, and marching-inspired energy into a groove-driven concert work. Written entirely for non-pitched instruments and a prominently displayed gong that teases audiences before making its long awaited debut, the piece creates a surprisingly wide range of colors and textures while approaching its material with a sense of humor.

Each performer contributes a distinct rhythmic voice, with improvisation opportunities that may be expanded at the performers’ discretion. From bongos and field drum to toms, cowbell, and bass drum, balance and ensemble awareness are essential as grooves pass between players and layers build throughout the work.
