Program Notes

Finished in the summer of 2016, Finding Oasis was commissioned by a consortium of student and professional saxophonists across the Southeastern and Midwestern United States. The piece is meant to push both the technical and musical capabilities of the instruments and performers, while taking nontraditional approaches to different genres of music. The first movement - Burnt Sands – alludes to the music of early 1990s video game soundtracks, and builds flowing rhythmic grooves over an Unconventional 7/8 + 4/4 time signature. The second movement Mirage is meant stay true to its namesake and change with every new performance. Featuring an eerie rhythmic drone on the brake drum and use of the altissimo register in the Tenor Saxophone, the movement also allows for the performers to ad lib. or improvise over certain sections. The third movement is inspired by heavy metal and rock music.[1]
