commission: Alexander E. Jimenez; premiere: 1987, Florida State University
Written for marimba, crotales, mark tree, temple blocks, and tuned gongs for solo percussionist. The first movement is a three-voice fugue, challenging the performer to enhance the subject and countersubject interplay. The second movement, Trio, makes use of the metallic percussion instruments played with the marimba. The final movement, Scherzo, involves rapid interplay between marimba and temple blocks in 3+3+2/8 meter. You can hear a recording of Movements for Marimba and Percussion on the University of North Carolina at Greensboro Percussion Ensemble CD, “Sketches”.
