Ed Soph’s career spans forty years as a performer, recording artist, author and teacher. Ed’s performing and recording credits include the big bands of Stan Kenton, Woody Herman, Bill Watrous, and Clark Terry. Small group associations include Dave Liebman, Bobby Shew, Lee Konitz, Marvin Stamm, Carl Fontana, John Abercrombie, Joe Henderson, Slide Hampton and Randy Brecker. Ed is currently a professor in the College of Music of the University of North Texas. He continues to perform and record, most notably in a group with trumpeter Marvin Stamm. The group has recorded three CDs: The Stamm-Soph Project in 2003 (With pianist Bill Mays, bassist Rufus Reid, and guest saxophonist David Liebman.), Live At Birdland (2005) with guest guitarist, John Abercrombie, and Alone Together (2008). Ed also tours with a trio that includes pianist Stefan Karlsson and bassist Tom Warrington. The trio has recorded three critically acclaimed CDs on the Troppe Note label. Ed has presented master classes in Great Britain, Australia, New Zealand, and throughout Europe as well as innumerable clinics and workshops, music festivals, and conferences throughout the United States and Canada. His insights into rhythmic improvisation, the art of practicing, stylistic concepts, technical principles, and fundamental aspects of musicality on the drum set make his presentations uniquely informative, practical, and entertaining.
