This is the last work in “The Ten Thousand Things” project. The percussion instruments are divided into four groups: metal (M), wood (W), skin (S), and all others (A), the last including electronics, radios, whistles, etc., all represented as 4 lines in a system. Instrumentation is left to the performer. The vertical position of the notes indicates volume, the centerline represents a dynamic of mf. There are 3 types of sound events: point events, line events, and a mixture of the two. The notation is in space, with one page equaling one minute. The work may be performed as a recording or with the use of a recording. The compositional means included chance operations and the use of the imperfections found in the paper upon which the work was written. Program Notes

This work was previously titled 27' 7.614" for a Percussionist.[1]

Composed in 1956. Premiered in Munich, February 2, 1962.
