Coming from a musical family, Gerben Jongsma  began taking percussion lessons with Henri de Boer at the age of seven through the former De Meldij Arts Center in Drachten. Gerben won several prizes at the Princess Christina Competition for both duo and solo performances in 2015, 2016, 2017, and 2019. In 2019, Gerben reached the National Finals in The Hague, where he won second prize and the Press Award. Gerben has appeared live several times on NPO Radio 4, including in the Spiegelzaal, "De Muziekfabriek," and during a broadcast of Podium Witteman. Gerben completed his theoretical training at the Young Talent Class in Heerenveen, with Frans Douwe Slot. In September 2019, Gerben was admitted to the Sweelinck Academy in conjunction with Percussion Friends in Amsterdam, where he studied with Arjan Jongsma. Gerben has played with the Ballet Orchestra, the Residentie Orchestra, and the North Netherlands Orchestra, among others, and has been a member of the Academy of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra since September 2024. Writing music himself has also been one of his passions since 2019. Gerben has now written several works for various ensembles. Gerben has written on commission for various ensembles and championships, such as the Jong Nederlands Blazers Ensemble Noord, SqueaKK, the Open Dutch Percussion Championships and the World Music Contest.
