Living Room Music is dedicated to Cage's then-wife Xenia. It is a quartet for unspecified instruments, all of which may be found in a living room of a typical house. The work consists of four movements: "To Begin", "Story", "Melody", and "End". Cage instructs the performers to use any household objects or architectural elements as instruments, and gives examples: magazines, cardboard, "largish books", floor, wooden frame of window, etc. | |||

Movement II ("Story") is a rhythmically spoken setting (including extended phonemics that sound like tiny machines, and whistling) of the opening of Gertrude Stein's "The World is Round": "Once upon a time the world was round and you could go on it around and around". Movement III, "Melody" combines the rhythmical tapping of Movement I with a modal melody in an Indian-like scale than can be played on any convenient melodic instrument.
