Patrick McLaughlinhad the opportunity to play in a variety of ensembles including the UNT PASIC drumline, percussion ensemble, gamelan, baroque orchestra and multiple world percussion ensembles while studying in the University. His interest in African rhythm led him to travel abroad to Ghana, Africa where he studied traditional West African music, drumming, culture and religion with the Ewe tribe. His interest in psychology led him to conduct a study that researched the affects of perceptual organization on rhythmic performance in 2008. The study was published by the Psychology of Music Journal, one of the highest rated music psychology journals, in 2009.

After graduating from UNT, Patrick taught and freelanced in the Dallas-Fort Worth area before becoming the drumline director at West Bloomfield High School in West Bloomfield, Michigan. In 2012, he founded Drumline Chops and grew the website's audience to more than 18, 000 drummers from over 50 countries. He's written, recorded, and published a wide variety of percussion education resources that continue to be used around the world.
