Overview
The theme on which these variations are based comes from Exercise No. 45 from Franz Krüger's (1880 - 1940) school for timpani and snare drum. Each individual variation focuses on a specific topic (e.g. pegs, peg connections, retuning processes / pedal technique, suggestions, two-handed play, fluent play over 4, 5 or even 7 timpani, etc..). These respective focal points are embedded in musical contexts. This gives the player the opportunity to deal with a well-balanced mixture of the most varied demands in each individual etude, which are made of the timpanist in the orchestra in a comparable way again and again.[1]
