Bruno Hartl, born in 1963 in Vienna, is principal timpanist in the Vienna Philharmnonic and, beyond this, has made a name for himself over the past years as a creative composer. At the age of six, he took his first piano lessons, then later joined the Vienna Choir Boys. Even early along in his musical life, he wrote his first compositions. His fascination with playing the timpani finally took him at the age of 13 to the Academy of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna, where he studied percussion, piano, trumpet and composition. He received his first engagement in 1980 as principal percussionist and assistant principal timpanist in the Mozarteum Orchestra in Salzburg. In 1984 he became a member of the Vienna State Opera Orchestra and was accepted into the Vienna Philharmonic as the youngest timpanist in the history of the orchestra. Since then Hartl has also enjoyed considerable success as a composer. His œuvre today comprises 25 works, many of them given their world premières in most impressive venues, such as the Vienna Musikverein, the Vienna Konzerthaus, at the Vienna Festival Weeks, the Jeunesse Musicale and the Brucknerhaus in Linz. Naturally many of Hartl’s compositions have been written for percussion instruments, such as the three Sonatas for Timpani and Piano the Xylophone Concerto and the Concerto for Percussion and Orchestra. Beyond these, he has also made very successful percussion arrangements of Stravinsky’s “Le sacre du printemps” and Khatchaturian’s “Spartacus”
