Player I: xylophone, glockenspiel, vibraphone, gongs, marimba
Player II: 8 tuned high drums (or 8 tom-toms of different indeterminate pitches), 5 temple blocks, gongs, glock, marimba
Player III: 5 metal sounds (not tuned but ringing in nature), glockenspiel, 5 temple blocks, susp cym, tenor drum
Player IV: 5 porcelain bowls (of different indeterminate pitches), bass drum, gongs, vibraphone


In the aggregate, those instruments required that at times are assigned as above among different players total one each of a set of gongs, temple blocks, glock, vib, and mrmb. The others are for only the one player named.

Program Notes

Premiered in Kansas City, MO, in the Temple B'nai Jehudah, at Connoisseur Concert of Kansas City Philharmonic Orchestra, cond. Hans Schwieger, 7 Jan 1961. The 5 percussion soloists, including timpanist, were: Head Percussionist Vera McNary Daehlin; Assts. Ben Uedell, Karen Kay Bichie, Judi Duffin, and Vincent Bilardo.
