===Review ===<br />
Commissioned by David Wuliger for Joye Sanchez, Suite for Solo Percussion by Michael Horvit is a multiple percussion work in four movements. Horvit uses a variety of instruments for his music such as five timpani, marimba, bells, temple blocks, wood blocks, castanets, cymbals and wind chimes. Throughout the suite the common denominator is the timpani which begins and ends each movement while the other instruments introduce and develop secondary themes. The first movement, Intrada, is fast and loud with the opening section concentrating on a dialogue between the timpani and the temple blocks and wood blocks. A middle section introduces the bells gating a softer theme over mixed meters with accompaniment In the wooden instruments. A return to the timpan and the original theme with embellishments completes the movement. The second movement, titled Gavotte, is slower and played. with four mallets, a combination of two hard felt and two brass mallets. With an introduction in the timpani, the glockenspeil enters on the main therne. This movement, like the first, is in ABA form with the contrasting section offering wood blocks, castanets and cymbal statements. The Gavotte is evenly paced in 2/4 throughout. The last two movements utilize the marimba and offer more timbre contrast. Ombres de la Nuit, the third movement, is very slow with the themes played in a legato style. The final movement, Rondo, is a fast driving work that encompasses the full instrumentation. The music is developed nicely and Horvit ends the suite with a fortissimo timpani statement. Michael Horvit's Suite for Solo Percussion is a suitable work for any intermediate/advanced percussionist. The overall content does not offer any "new ground" for the medium, but could easily be programmed on a college level recital program.
