			Nuclear Conversion was commissioned by David Steffens, Professor of Percussion at Oklahoma City University.

			The performer is surrounded by an array of pitched mallet instruments (vibraphone, chimes, marimba, and glockenspiel), drums (bass drum, floor tom, timbales, and eight skin drums), metal instruments (suspended cymbal and triangle), and wooden instruments (wood blocks, temple blocks, and log drums). The notion of a sole player’s bringing 29 percussion instruments under his or her control appeals to me very much. There is something heroic about it. At times, contrasting timbres, such as those obtained from wood and metal, are emphasized in order to underscore their opposing qualities. But in many passages, timbres of all sorts are mixed and blended so rapidly that they give the impression of having melded into some new multifarious instrument. The titles of the three movements Equilibrium, Displacement, and Meltdown adequately describe the increase in tension level over the course of the composition.
