			Lucky Nashville (2025) was commissioned by Ji Hye Jung and W. Lee Vinson with support from Vanderbilt University. The piece is a duo scored for 5.0 octave marimba and snare drum.

			It was surreal when Ji Hye and Lee asked me to compose a piece for them. In my eyes, they are percussion rock stars and musical inspirations. Lee and I were classmates at Eastman School of Music, where he left a lasting impression on me and my approach to snare drum. I’ll never forget being in the percussion section during his snare drumming on Karel Husa’s Music for Prague, 1968. I caught eyes with the other members of the section during his minute long pianissimo solo. There was this collective feeling that this was some of the most beautiful snare drumming we had ever heard. Lee helped me realize that the snare drum could be silky, subtle, and legato, and his style has informed how I play, compose for, and teach the instrument.

			Ji Hye has left a lasting impact on me and the percussion world. Consistently taking on the most difficult repertoire in our literature with supreme artistry, she has forever been on my short list of favorite musicians. Her bouncy and energetic way of playing is infectious, and I often seek out her performance videos in my teaching. I couldn’t have been happier to find out her and Lee had become a couple, and the three of us have formed a strong bond and friendship over the years as musical contemporaries and through our parallel journey as parents.

	~~<!--~~for ~~copying~~ and ~~pasting~~		With Lucky Nashville, I wanted to showcase each of their distinct playing styles, and also find a way for the two parts to compliment one another. The sentiment and spirit of the piece has a double meaning. For one, the Nashville community is incredibly lucky to have Ji Hye and Lee active in their music scene. I hope their local audience feels a particular sense of pride when they see them play this music. And Nashville has been a lucky place for Ji Hye and Lee too. It’s where they started a family, and where their lives and artistic spirits have blossomed.
