Episoden is an enigmatic work mainly because it goes down to a low C, a fourth below even the new 4 1/2 octave instruments. Is this an oversight or is Roeder the first composer to foresee a trend towards an even lower range? At the same time, this work is the most suited for recital performance. The piece is very short (under six minutes) yet has four movements entitled "Prolog," "Valse," "Fantasy" and "Intermezzo." The Prolog demands ability to play a one-handed roll but only on one note (often more difficult than other configurations) and it is used in a very simple form. Even though the Valse movement is very short (under one minute) it reminded me of La Valse by Ravel with its sense of music somehow coming through a fog. The Fantasy is rondo like with several glissandi. The Intermezzo is a rather simple-minded working of a rhythmic figure.
