[[Crosswalk]] was written by [[David Reeves]] for the Center Grove High School Percussion Ensemble under the direction of Mr. Josh Torres. The make-up of the score consists of fairly standard “western” percussion instruments commonly found in the average high school’s percussion inventory. Each player has a pitched instrument and four non-pitched surfaces. Though the piece is not intentionally programmatic, the title does imply somewhat of an unusual gait to the overall rhythmic structure of the music. This is realized in the very first few measures with the short repeated phrases beginning and ending across the barline and seldom finding beat one. Walking implies forward motion, and the lack of downbeat arrivals give the music that constant leaning and falling forward into the next phrase. The tempo markings further illustrate this crooked promenade idea by using a walking reference (e.g. “moderate pace” or “nervous jog”) along with the metronomic marking. Crosswalk was premiered at the 2010 Midwest Band and Orchestra Clinic in Chicago, Illinois.

Joaquin on Sunshine was originally written in 2008 under the working title “El Ritmo Adentro.” In the early stages of my writing, the rhythms started developing an Afro-Cuban flavor, and before I knew it, I was writing my first songo-inspired piece. This wasn’t my original intent. I set out to write something where syncopation dictated its energy and the downbeats were rarely the dominant part of the pulse, melody, or phrasings. (El Ritmo Adentro translates to “The Rhythm Inside.”)

As the piece solidified, it took on a festive quality that turned out to be a lot of fun. However, I could never quite come up with a title that reflected this in addition to its Latin flavor. So while the title didn’t come around until after the piece was finished (with inspiration from my friends [[Murray Gusseck]] and [[David Reeves]]), I love that our friend Joaquin has something to smile about. Fans of the band Katrina and the Waves may not appreciate the corny wordplay, but it makes me happy.

Written for a large ensemble, the piece uses a fairly typical array of percussion instruments as well as a rhythm section including bass guitar, piano, [[drumset]], [[timbales]], [[bongos]], [[congas]] and [[shekere]]. A recurring motive of 2+3 rumba clave appears regularly, though it isn’t meant to be a constant key to the groove. Aside from the inherent challenges imposed by the syncopation, the often dense scoring can be difficult for players to navigate within. This becomes a great way for ensembles to rehearse awareness so that accompaniment doesn’t become heavy and for more melodic parts to relate their off-beat phrasings to the groove supplied by the accompaniment. When performed well, the phrasing feels precise and fluid while weaving around the strong beats, with the various instruments finding a comfortable balance with each other.

This becomes a great way for ensembles to rehearse awareness so that accompaniment doesn’t become heavy and for more melodic parts to relate their off-beat phrasings to the groove supplied by the accompaniment. When performed well, the phrasing feels precise and fluid while weaving around the strong beats, with the various instruments finding a comfortable balance with each other.

Phage by [[Pat Muchmore]] is a programmatic work for percussion ensemble that depicts the infection of a bacteria cell by a T-4 bacteriaphage. This is a process where the infection is able to connect to a bacteria cell and inject its own DNA, effectively taking over the cell. All of this, in musical terms, is depicted with two motives. There is the 'host' motive which is depicted at the beginning in the marimba orchestra and 'phage' motive which appears later and slowly takes over the host. When the motives come together, it is a violent struggle as the two ideas struggle for dominance before both are eventually destroyed - depicted by the loud and destructive ending.

This percussion ensemble piece is inspired by the Latin-American salsa style of music and dance. Though the work uses eighth notes as the smallest subdivision at a moderate tempo, the challenge is in producing and maintaining what Slawson calls “an infectious groove” as an ensemble. It is most appropriate for a younger, high-school level percussion section and works well as an introduction to Latin instruments and rhythms. With the exception of one part, each player is only responsible for one instrument. is allows students to focus on the technical skills needed for their parts, particularly benefiting those who have little to no prior experience. The timpani part requires three drums and can be played on the 29-, 26-, and 23-inch drums if desired, accommodating programs that might not have access to the largest drum. However, some programs might find it difficult to perform because many of the auxiliary instruments cannot be replaced by alternatives without losing the characteristic favor, requiring directors to purchase uncommonly used instruments solely for this composition. Perhaps the most appealing component of Bongito is the varying difficulty level of the individual parts. This ensures that each player in your ensemble will have an appropriate challenge, and it helps create a more inclusive group atmosphere. e educational merit of the work would be evident if there were more section features or dynamic variation, especially for an ensemble of this size. Who is Tapspace? 
Tapspace is driven by [[Jim Casella]] and [[Murray Gusseck]]. Jim and Murray are probably best known for their work with the Santa Clara Vanguard Drum and Bugle Corps (SCV) in the 1990's and 2000's. During this time, they helped shape percussion music that influenced the art form in new ways. They also shared a cubicle at Apple Computer working as QA engineers for a brief stint. Quickly realizing they didn't necessarily want to become entrenched in a corporate job, they decided to put their collective computer skills to use in creating and publishing creative percussion music.

Aside from their background in rudimental percussion, Jim and Murray have both maintained active careers as professional percussionists and composers.

What does Tapspace do? 
We publish percussion sheet music, educational resources, and sample library software to serve the needs of music educators who are passionate about creativity and like good music as much as we do.

When did we start all of this? 
One day in 1998 while living in San Jose, CA as roommates, Jim asked Murray, "Hey dude, do you want to start a publishing company?" Murray responded, "Sure, why not?" With a combined weight of approximately 370 pounds, Tapspace was born. We started by publishing some of the drumline music we were writing for SCV at the time. With our schedules being so busy with touring, performing, teaching, and writing, Tapspace was more of a hobby than a full time job in those days. We were just excited to have an outlet for our writings, and luckily people seemed to dig what we were doing!

Around 2000, we began to diversify by publishing the works of other talented composers and adding concert percussion ensembles to our catalog. In 2003, we released the first rendition of the groundbreaking "Virtual Drumline" sample library, which soon revolutionized the way composers and arrangers integrate percussion sounds into their compositional process.

Since then, VDL has become a household name in music education, and our sheet music catalog has grown by leaps and bounds. Our star-studded list of published artists are some of the best in the business, and our music is now being performed daily across the globe. Needless to say, Tapspace has since become a full-time operation!

Why do we do what we do? 
We do what we do because we love music—plain and simple. Tapspace has grown because of the genuineness that shines when good people put their best foot forward to make something great. Chad Heiny is a multifaceted freelance musician and educator residing in the Greater Pittsburgh Area. An avid, versatile, and regularly commissioned composer, Chad has created music for an eclectic collection of ensembles and performers across the globe. His works, including a World Premiere at the 2018 [[Percussive Arts Society International Convention]], are published by both [[Tapspace Publications]] and [[C. Alan Publications]]. He also holds positions as Music Editor with [[Tapspace Publications]], Program Coordinator for the Blue Knights Drum & Bugle Corps, and is an adjudicator for Winter Guard International.

Chad has been a passionate contributor to the pageantry arts since 1999, and prior to his current role at the Blue Knights, he arranged, coordinated, or consulted for several DCI World Championship Finalists including The Cadets, Spirit of Atlanta, Boston Crusaders, and Glassmen. An acclaimed percussion arranger, wind arranger, and program coordinator for high school and collegiate marching bands across the country, Chad’s work throughout the fall has won the hearts and minds of students, staffs, fans, and adjudicators. Accolades here include a 3rd Place Finish (and the award for High Music) with the Hebron High School Marching Band at the 2019 Bands of America Grand National Championships, several BOA Regional Champions, and many BOA Regional Finalists. He can also be seen walking across Heinz Field on game days as Creative Consultant for the Pittsburgh Steeline.

Like that piece, Undisclosed features three soloists out front and six performers in the back. The work is through-composed and boasts a relentless, exciting forward motion that is well served by its vibrant instrumentation of only non-pitched percussion and its dramatic use of dynamics.

==Review==
If you are looking for a large ensemble that can be performed by players of all different ability levels, “Undisclosed” may very well fit the bill. In an homage to [[Michael Colgrass]]’s “Three Brothers, ” [[Chad Heiny]] composed a piece that is sure to excite audiences and ensembles alike.

The piece begins with a ppp [[snare drum]] roll and maracas swirling at the same soft dynamic level; these two parts will definitely require more skill than others. [[Chad Heiny]]’s extensive marching experience is evident, having a bit of a front ensemble sound at times, but he blends it well with “traditional” percussion ensemble nuance and instrumentation, a further nod to [[Michael Colgrass]]. The piece is through composed, but uses the opening rhythmic motive (and the ppp rolls and swirls mentioned earlier) to conclude the piece.

Oftentimes composers, especially in ensemble music written in the last 20 years, are not clear enough in writing their vision for the music. [[Chad Heiny]]’s writing and musical notation are extremely PERCUSSIVE NOTES 64 MARCH 2014 clear and concise. In fact, he gives excellent direction to the sound that he envisions by using specific instructions like “fist” for the tambourine part, “swirl” for the maracas, and “ride (bell) ” for the [[cymbal]] part. A high school or young college ensemble would benefit greatly from the technical and musical challenges provided in this composition.

Some of the ocean’s most mysterious and elusive creatures possess the flexible appendages known as tentacles. Written for 6–10 beginning percussionists, Tentacles depicts these creatures. “Tentacles” is a wonderful piece that is appropriate for a young percussion ensemble that is ready to go one step beyond absolute beginner. The composer states, “The piece depicts the flexible appendages found on some of the oceans’ most mysterious and elusive creatures. Flowing, yet powerful, the work explores the different facts of tentacles.”

[[John Willmarth]]’s piece can be played by 6-10 percussionists and allows for flexibility in equipment situations. The minimum keyboard requirements are glockenspiel and xylophone, which most programs will have. As is typical in most beginning percussion programs, each player will develop at a slightly different pace. The parts are written to have varying difficulties ensuring all your students are challenged.

“Tentacles” is Avery accessible yet mature sounding piece, as if it were pulled directly from a well-written movie soundtrack. This will, without a doubt, draw students in and get them excited immediately. The keyboard parts are repetitive, allowing for students with less pitched-percussion experience to be successful. The percussion parts leave room for timbral exploration—i.e. brushes on cymbal, triangle muting, and tam-tam played with triangle beater. “Tentacles” should be in every band program’s beginning percussion library, as it would be a great piece to perform at concerts and festivals a like.

Yurikago is a Japanese folk song by composer Shinsaku Kusakawa. In her description of the piece, arranger Rika Fujii states, "It is a song my mother used to sing to me as a child." Although the original song was written in 4/4, this piece is treated in 3/4 to convey a swinging cradle and lullaby feeling. Originally arranged by Fujii as a duet for [[marimba]] and sanukite (keyboard instrument made out of sanukite stones found in the Kagawa Prefecture of Japan) for her and her mother, Brian Zator expanded the duo arrangement to a quartet using two marimbas and two vibraphones. This would be an effective intermediate level piece for a program wanting to highlight the warmth and tenderness attainable by mallet keyboard quartets.
