==Description==
Internal Rhythms is divided into two groups of four for a practical reason - the piece was written for two university percussion ensemble that would have to rehearse, some of the time, in separate towns. Therefore, each of the two quartets plays large sections of self-contained music that can be rehearsed without the other four players.
The three movements essentially present the same rhythmic theme in different colors. The first movement utilizes only indefinite pitched metal and wood instruments. The second movement presents a repetition and extension of the rhythms in the first movement using definite pitched metal and wood instruments. In this way, the first two movements present the aural equivalent of non-representational (indefinite pitch) and representational imagery (definite pitch) in visual art. Or, to use another visual metaphor, this process of recasting the same material without and with definite pitches is akin to "color-izing" an image that was originally seen in black and white. The third movement repeats and extends the music of the second, returning to indefinite pitched instruments, all eight players on skins.
----
Alfred Reed was an American neoclassical composer, with more than two hundred published works for concert band, orchestra, chorus and chamber ensemble to his name. He also traveled extensively as a guest conductor, performing in North America, Latin America, Europe and Asia. Alfred Reed was the executive editor of Hansen Publications, a music publisher. He was the professor of music at the University of Miami where he worked with composer Clifton Williams from 1966 until the latter's death in 1976. Williams' office was across the hall from Reed's office in the UM School of Music, and Reed was chairman of the department of Music Media and Industry and director of the Music Industry Program at the time of his retirement. He established the very first college-level music business curriculum at the University of Miami in 1966, which led other colleges and universities to follow suit. At the time of his death, he had composition commissions that would have taken him to the age of 115.[citation needed] Many of Reed's wind band compositions have been released as CD recordings by the Tokyo Kosei Wind Orchestra.
==Program Notes==
Written for famed Japanese marimba soloist, [[Reiko Kono]]. This concerto-like work is accompanied by the full resources of the modern concert band. The movements are a romantic Nocturne, a gay, lilting Scherzetto, and a brilliant Toccata which is surprisingly set to a swing-boogie rhythmic background.
==Program Notes==
This work is a series of tone poems, featuring marimba and orchestra that depicts American locales as presented by notable American authors. I employed a neo-tonal compositional approach to portray these musical scenes.
