Commissioned by Matthew Darling and the Fresno State Percussion Ensemble, Accidental Migration was the 1st Place Winner of the 2007 Percussive Arts Society Composition Contest. This single movement work for solo marimba and percussion ensemble is inspired by the excitement, stress, and fear brought forth from unanticipated change. Musically speaking, this is heard as seemingly consistent patterns make decidedly unexpected transformations. These occur either through changes in pulse, in melodic inflection, or in the overall stylistic feel of the work. The title Accidental Migration is a play on words, meaning both the unintentional arrival at a new location, as well as the constant movement of altered pitches Ð accidentals.
Program Notes
The impetus for writing Yep was to create a multi-percussion solo with a compact set-up that uses a couple of non-traditional multi set-up instruments, such as bass marimba and vibraslap. The musical content of the solo is meant to give the listener a look into my mind and how it works. It travels quickly through different styles and emotions, making the listener feel they are always trying to catch up with the music. In one moment you might be grooving to a light and quirky section and then, without warning, you are hit with a flurry of notes that forces you into a more aggressive and stressful emotion. These constant changes in mood and musical styles are meant to leave the listener disoriented and thinking, “what just happened?” by the end.
Program Notes
The Thracian people, present in Southeastern Europe beginning around 1000 B.C., were regarded as bloodthirsty barbarians by Greeks and Romans of the time. In one version of the Greek myth of Orpheus, the Thracians confronted Orpheus while he was searching for Eurydice, inviting him to join in their barbaric indulgences before killing him upon his stiff refusal. The first movement of Thracian Rhythm depicts the entry of the Thracians, singing and romping as they greet Orpheus. The second movement, ‘Decadent,’ represents the Thracians and their bacchantes, or drunken female revelers with whom their relationship was far from innocent and pure. Finally, the third movement includes Orpheus’ refusal to join in the Thracian festivities, and the Thracians’ reaction, resulting in Orpheus’ death. Thracian Rhythm was commissioned by Portuguese percussionist Vitor Castro.
Description
Yagibushi is a type of Japanese folksong, this one being written by Steve Grimo. Yagi is a place between Kyoto and west of the Kansai district in Japan, with bushi meaning song. There is a distinct rhythm and narrow range usually sung by a chorus in unison which characterize this type of work song, drinking song, and dance song. The accompaniment to the Yagibushi is usually performed with the Shamisen (long-neck lute), hand clapping and a variety of percussion instruments.
Program Notes
ESCAPADE (1991) for alto saxophone and four percussion by Howard J. Buss. This colorful and inventive composition explores a sequence of emotional states which develop over a talea, a fixed pattern of time values. Except during the extended saxophone cadenza, this repeating rhythmic pattern can be heard throughout the work in varying degrees of intensity. At times it is forcibly presented by the musicians moving in rhythmic unison. On other occasions the talea is fragmented and distributed among the players. Frequently this rhythmic pattern is embedded in the presentation of melodic material similar to the technique of isorhythm as it was employed by 14th-century masters such as Machaut and de Vitry. The continuous variation of the unifying talea coupled with the work’s intriguing melodies and exotic timbral contrasts, make this an accessible and enjoyable concert work. Percussion distribution: Percussion 1: Timpani (4), temple blocks, snare drum, and 2 suspended cymbals; Percussion 2: Orchestra bells, xylophone, maracas, triangle, 2 cow bells, suspended cymbal, and chime tree; Percussion 3: Vibraphone, tam-tam, roto toms, and claves; Percussion 4: Marimba, guiro, and 2 suspended cymbals. “By far the night’s most memorable piece.” - The Los Angeles Times.

premiere: 28 October 1991, Tampa Florida, USFPE, Robert McCormick, dir., Art Woodbury, solo<nr>
Mattingly, Rick. The Drums and Percussion Cook Book: Creative Recipes for Players and Teachers. Galesville, MD: Meredith Music Publications, 2008.
This book has a tremendous amount of advice. Topics include how to practice well, interpreting a piece of music, and how to mentally get un-frustrated with a piece. Each person in this book was allowed a couple of pages to explain something to a percussionist. There is a wide range of topics and some of them get repeated, but they are written by percussionist like Christopher Deane, Michael Burritt, and Anthony Cirone who’s music I have played.
I think this book is great. It isn’t exactly a method book, but it offers great advice by composers who write the music I play. Because of this, I would use this book.
