Program Notes
Originally from a suite for solo harpsichord in E minor, Rameau’s "Tambourin" has been transposed, simplified, and scored for young flexible percussion ensemble by Michael Huestis. The Tambourin is a spirited dance form that adds a lively touch to Baroque dance suites. With origins in French folk traditions, the dance infuses energy and excitement into the suite’s repertoire.
Key Characteristics
Tempo and Style: The Tambourin is known for its brisk tempo and vibrant style. Its rapid and lively movements evoke a sense of enthusiasm and dynamism.

Meter and Rhythm: Typically, the Tambourin features a fast tempo with a simple and lively duple meter (2/4 or 4/4). Its energetic rhythm contributes to its lively and celebratory character.

Description
A jam block is a percussion instrument which is a modern, hard plastic version of the wood block. It is sometimes referred to as a "clave block", "gok block", "tempo block" or in marching band terms, "gock block". Jam blocks are popularly used for their sturdiness and durability compared to the traditional wood block, as well as in cowbell-like roles.

Jam blocks are usually attached to timbales and drum kits, but can also be used as standalone orchestral instruments. These blocks are often used in salsa and other Latin American styles, although some modern drummers have made use of them in rock songs. Jam blocks are often used in the marching percussion idiom as well.
Since 1964, Latin Percussion has connected performers, audiences, and communities through rhythm. LP was forged by the vibrant mid-century New York City Latin jazz scene, which inspired founder Martin Cohen on a lifelong journey to develop traditional and innovative instruments from all cultures for percussionists ranging from professionals to elementary age. Over the last 60-plus years, LP has become an iconic musical instrument brand that transcends genre and includes appearances on more recordings and live performances than any other brand.
General Info
Composer Notes
Synced/UnSynced was composed for the Beta Percussion International Institute ONLINE for participants and faculty to play and record together as a group project. The question is, how do we play together while not being physically together?
As the titles allude, Synced uses the obvious solution of playing with a click track.

-The instrumentation is left open.
-There are 7 parts in total, 5 of which are optional. No minimum # of players required, as long as Parts 1&2 are covered. If more than 6 players (or 7 with drumset), players may also ad-lib or double any of the parts
-Octave transpositions and doublings are allowed for all parts
-Part 1, notes in brackets are optional.
-Part 3-6 can be played on unpitched instruments
-Performers are encouraged to think creatively and arrange the parts how they see fit for their ensemble.

*Version for Beta2020 is included for reference

Solution for UnSynced is music that does not need to line up in a specific way. Instrumentation is free, and all players play from the same part. The goal is to create a sound texture with unsynchronized realizations of the same part. Part of the creativity is in how the ensemble, or editor, choose to ‘align’ the players. Any number of ways to align can work. For example, all players can choose to start together, or arrive at the measure 39 climax at around the same time, or end together, etc.
----
Great Musicians have been linked with their instruments throughout the history of music. We are truly fortunate to be able to hear and experience the artistry of Keiko Abe playing marimba. Audiences hearing her performance for the first time are often astonished by the modern marimba’s wealth of tonal nuances and by the tremendous scope of Abe’s creativity and musicianship. Keiko Abe has the ability to merge with her marimba: the resulting union produces music with incredible depth of feeling. She represents a perfect combination of virtuoso technique and passionate artistry.

Keiko Abe has developed her position as a world-class musician thanks to a rare combination of creative power, acute sensitivity and virtuosic technique. She commands an overwhelming repertoire and appears regularly throughout the world in performances of solo concertos, chamber music, and improvisations. She is also in demand as a guest lecturer and has given master-classes in leading music conservatories in North America, Central and South America, Europe, and Asia.

In addition, she has recorded extensively on the Denon label, and has received numerous awards, including induction into the Percussive Arts Society Hall of Fame Award. Keiko Abe’s compositions have become some of the standards of marimba literature and can be heard in recitals by marimbists all over the world. Many modern composers have also dedicated new works to her; she has inspired and premiered countless new compositions.

By both pioneering new technical skills and expanding the literature, Keiko Abe has transformed what was once considered a primitive “Folk” instrument into a full-fledged concert instrument welcome in any of the most prestigious concert halls. In addition to her work as Professor of Marimba at Toho Gakuen School of Music in Tokyo, Abe maintains a full schedule of composing and touring.
The Rationale
Don't we all love the sight of the snare drummer in the back of the room with sticks hanging out of one pocket and a triangle beater hanging out of the other? How about the glockenspiel player with their mallets on the floor? The thought, "I really should put those mallets somewhere else..." rarely occurs to a young percussionist. Trap Door is primarily designed to help young performers become comfortable using an accessory station or trap table. A well-planned trap table can go a long way in developing a sense of organization and responsibility. A secondary focus of Trap Door is counting rests through busy passages. We often teach using unison lines to the point where students develop strength in numbers. It can be intimidating when that confidence is taken away, so in this piece we wean them off through progressively interrupting a repetitive pattern.<br/>
Primary Focus: A well-planned trap table can go a long way in developing a sence of organization and responsibility.<br/>
Secondary Focus: Counting Rest <br/>

Recent Performance
<embedvideo service="youtube"> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2F_rEfK0EFI&list=PLFA6B2B34537AA08F </embedvideo>

Notes to Performer
A common full band rehearsal setup would have one trap table for snare drum and bass drum player, one for accessories players, one for keyboard player and one for timpani. <br/>
Use black towels for the trap table. <br/>
